How to distinguish truly natural children's body care cosmetics from marketing gimmicks? A complete guide for parents
In today's information overload era, it is becoming increasingly difficult for parents to make seemingly simple decisions. When we enter any supermarket or pharmacy, the children's body care department welcomes us with cute drawings, colorful packaging and loud promises: "100% natural", "Eco", "Bio", "The gentlest for your baby". However, when we look at the ingredient lists of these products, the reality is often drastically different.
The “green deception” or greenwashing is a marketing strategy in which companies spend huge resources to create a visual impression of the naturalness of a product, rather than actually improving its composition. Since a child's skin is up to five times thinner than adult skin, its protective barrier has not yet fully formed. This means that a child's skin has a significantly greater ability to absorb chemicals, and irritation occurs much more quickly.
In this blog article, we'll delve into the details that cosmetic giants would like to keep secret and help you choose the safest for your baby.
1. Golden Rule: Forget about the front of the package
Marketers are masters of psychology. They know that a green leaf on a label or a matte, recycled paper packaging automatically associates nature, safety, and peace in the human brain. But the terms “Natural” or “Organic” on the front of the package are mostly not legally protected. This means that a manufacturer can add 0,1% chamomile extract to a cheap petroleum-based product and still legally call it “Natural Chamomile Shower Gel.”
Solution: Reading the INCI ingredient list.
INCI (International nomenclature of cosmetic ingredients) is an international system for listing ingredients. The most important thing you need to know: the ingredients are listed in descending order. The first 5-7 ingredients usually make up about 80-90% of the total content of the product. If you see water there (Aqua) and then a series of long, synthetic names follow, the naturalness of the product is just an illusion.
Creating ONE:ZERO for Kids line, we decided not to play this game. Our INCI lists are short and transparent – each ingredient has a specific purpose, not for marketing purposes.
2. The biggest source of allergens – “Parfum” or fragrances
We all love that “baby smell,” but the harsh truth is: natural plant extracts rarely have the intense, sweet scent that popular brands offer. Under the name “Perfume” or “Fragrance” The manufacturer is allowed to hide hundreds of different chemical compounds because they are considered a “trade secret.” Often these are phthalates – substances that help the scent last longer, but which have been linked to hormonal disruption in scientific studies.
For children with atopic dermatitis or sensitive skin, synthetic fragrances are one of the biggest skin irritants. Even if a product is labeled “Hypoallergenic,” it may contain fragrances that are simply less aggressive.
ONE:ZERO for Kids philosophy:
We believe that a baby's natural scent is the most beautiful and soothing. That's why our massage oil and bath foam are completely fragrance-freeWe don't even use natural essential oils in baby (0+) products, as they can also be too strong for a newborn's sensory system.
3. Aggressive foaming agents: SLS and SLES
Parents and children love it when shampoo or bath foam forms a big cloud. However, this rich foam is usually provided by cheap and aggressive surfactants: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES).
These substances are so powerful that they are also used in industrial degreasers and garage floor cleaners. On a child's skin, they act as an aggressor - literally "eating away" the natural lipid layer, causing dryness, itching and even microcracks.
What to look for in a place?
Milder alternatives, such as Coco-Glucoside (derived from coconuts) that we use in ONE:ZERO for Kids Intimate Foaming Cleanser. It creates an airy, soft cloud that cleanses gently without disrupting the skin's natural pH level.
4. Petroleum products that replace vegetable oils
Many classic “baby oil” brands use as their main ingredient Liquid paraffin or mineral oil. It is a by-product of petroleum refining, is cheap, odorless, and never spoils. However, this oil is “dead.” It forms a non-breathing film (occlusion) on the skin, clogging pores and interfering with the skin’s natural thermoregulation.
Alternative:
Natural cosmetics use vegetable oils. For example, our massage oils is based on sweet almond and avocado oils. Unlike mineral oil, vegetable oils contain vitamins (A, E, D) and fatty acids that actually integrate into the skin's structure and nourish it, allowing it to breathe. In addition, almond oil helps soothe irritation caused by diaper rash.
5. The Maze of Preservatives: From Parabens to Phenoxyethanol
Any product that contains water cannot be without preservatives, otherwise bacteria would multiply in it within a few days. But the question is – what preservatives are used?
- Parabens: (Methylparaben, Ethylparaben etc.) – widely criticized for their ability to mimic estrogen in the body and accumulate in tissues.
- Phenoxyethanol: A popular alternative to parabens, but its use is restricted in baby products because it can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract.
Natural and safe cosmetics use food-grade preservatives, such as: Sodium Benzoate un Potassium SorbateWe choose exactly such ingredients, understandable to the child's body. ONE:ZERO for Kids in product manufacturing processes.
6. Dyes and visual tricks
Blue shampoo for boys and pink for girls? No plant extract in nature produces a neon pink color. Synthetic dyes (CI with a number, for example, CI 17200) is a completely unnecessary skin irritant that serves no purpose other than the visual appeal of the product itself. Children's cosmetics should be as close to their natural state as possible – colorless or naturally cloudy. That's why you won't find any artificial pigments in our products.
7. The Slow Care Philosophy: Why Less is More?
We live in a consumer culture where we are told that a child needs a separate cream for their hands, feet, face, and every hour of the day. In reality, a child's skin needs peace the most. Excessive use of products and frequent washing with aggressive soaps disrupts the development of the skin's microbiome.
we, ONE:ZERO for Kids, we adhere to the “Slow Care” principle:
- Use only what is really necessary.
- Choose multifunctional products. For example, our massage oil is ideal for an evening ritual, for protecting dry hair, and for gentle scalp care (if your baby has cradle cap).
- Reduce the ingredient list to a minimum. Fewer ingredients mean less risk of allergens.
This philosophy is also reflected in our design – we want bath time to be an aesthetic and peaceful moment for both child and parent.
Conclusion: Your voice is your wallet
Every time you choose a truly natural product, you provide a safer and more peaceful environment for your child. The “green lie” won’t disappear tomorrow, but your knowledge is the best weapon against it.
Next time you go shopping, don't let the cute designs fool you. Turn the bottle upside down and check the ingredients list - the first five ingredients will tell the whole truth about what's really going on your child's skin.
We all want the best for our children – and often that “best” means “nothing extra.” Discover our vision for pure skincare and discover ONE:ZERO for Kids range where nature meets science and a peaceful parental conscience. 🐌🌿
